SRINAGAR: Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai informed Rajya Sabha on Wednesday that 174 civilians, 308 security personnel, and 1002 militants were killed in 761 militant attacks in Jammu and Kashmir between 2018 and 2022.
Rai in a written reply to a question said that 174 civilians were killed in J&K in 761 militant attacks in the erstwhile state in the last 5 years between 2018 and 2022.
“Within this five-year timeframe, the region experienced a tragic loss of life,” stated Rai. “Among these, 174 civilians fell victim to the terror attacks, and 308 security personnel also lost their lives. Furthermore, in addition to the terror attacks, 35 civilians lost their lives in the Union Territory within 626 encounters that transpired during the same period. These statistics indicated the significant toll on security forces, with 308 personnel sacrificing their lives in the line of duty.”
Drawing attention to the efforts to provide support to those affected, Rai shared that the Ministry of Home Affairs has implemented a central scheme aimed at assisting civilian victims and the families of victims impacted by terrorist incidents, communal violence, Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) violence, cross-border firing, and incidents involving explosive devices on Indian soil.
Elaborating further, Rai pointed out, “This scheme has been in operation since 2008, with compensation ranging from Rs 3 Lakh to 5 Lakh announced for incidents starting from August 24, 2016. The disbursement of compensation is the responsibility of state governments, who subsequently seek reimbursement.”
