SRINAGAR: Two militants have been killed in an encounter with government forces in Shopian district on Monday, police sources said.
“Early today, a gunfight broke out between militants and the counter-insurgent forces in Rebon area of Shopian district.
Reportedly two militants have been killed so far,” reports quoting police official said. However, the identity of the militants is yet to be ascertained, he added.
Reports said the gunfight broke out after a joint team of army, Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation in Rebon village of Shopian. A ‘border’ village between Shopian and Kulgam districts near Imam Sahib, Reban is almost 18 km from the main town.
They said the hiding militants, opened fire on the forces which resulted in a heavy exchange of fire. Reports indicate that the toll may increase. The house in which the militants were trapped has suffered damage. The operation is still in progress.
