BJP suspends spokesperson Nupur Sharma, expels Naveen Jindal from party

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday suspended spokesperson Nupur Sharma from the party’s primary membership over controversial comments against Prophet Mohammad during a recent TV debate, reported India Today.

In the suspension letter, the party’s central disciplinary committee wrote, “You have expressed views contrary to the party’s position on various matters… Pending further inquiry, you are suspended from the party and from your responsibilities with immediate effect.”

Sharma is believed to have mocked Islam and Prophet Muhammad. during a TV debate.

As per the report, the cases have been registered against Sharma for hurting religious sentiments in Hyderabad, Pune and Mumbai.

Shortly before news of Nupur Sharma’s suspension emerged, the BJP released a statement on Sunday saying it respects all religions and strongly denounces insult of any religious personalities.

“The BJP is strongly against any ideology which insults or demeans any sect or religion. The BJP does not promote such people or philosophy,” the press release signed by BJP national general secretary Arun Singh said.
