Cost must be imposed on countries aiding terrorism as part of foreign policy: PM Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi Friday said cost must be imposed on countries that aid terrorism as part of their foreign policy by providing political, ideological and financial support, reported Press Trust of India (PTI).
Organisations and individuals that try to create sympathy for terrorists must also be isolated, he said addressing the third ‘No Money for Terror Ministerial Conference on Counter-Terrorism Financing’ hosted by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
“There can be no ifs and buts interfering in such matters. The world needs to be united against all kinds of overt and covert backing of terrorism,” Modi said.
As per the report, the prime minister said tactical gains against terrorists will soon be lost without a larger strategy aimed at hurting terror finances.
Among those who were present on the occasion today were Union Home Minister, Shri Amit Shah, Minister of State for Home Affairs, Shri Nityanand Rai, Home Secretary, Shri Ajay Kumar Bhalla, and Director General of National Investigation Agency, Shri Dinkar Gupta.
National Investigation Agency (NIA) Director General Dinkar Gupta said, “There has been a significant reduction in terrorist activities in India during the leadership of PM Modi in the last eight years. There has also been a large decrease in the overall economic impact of terrorism in India during this period.”
Quoting the agencies, the Daily Excelsior reported that DG Gupta also lauded the Centre’s zero-tolerance policy to terrorism and said that it has brought a “remarkable change” in the security scenario of the country.
The two-day meeting scheduled for 18 and 19 November will provide a distinctive forum for participating nations and organisations to discuss the efficacy of the current global counterterrorism financing regime and the steps necessary to address emerging challenges. It will be attended by about 450 delegates from across the world, including Ministers, Heads of Multilateral organisations and Financial Action Task Force (FATF) Heads of Delegations.
During the Conference, deliberations will be held in four sessions which will focus on ‘Global Trends in Terrorism and Terrorist Financing’, ‘Use of Formal and Informal Channels of Funds for Terrorism’, ‘Emerging Technologies and Terrorist Financing’ and ‘International Co-operation to Address Challenges in Combating Terrorist Financing’.
