The authorities on Friday confirmed the first case of Mucormycosis popularly known as “Black Fungus” at Government Medical College Jammu.
Principal GMC Jammu, Dr. Shashi Sudan told a local news agency, Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that a Mucormycosis case has been found in a forty-year-old patient and he is under observation.
She said that the patient has recently recovered from Covid-19, however, he is now suffering from “uncontrolled diabetes”.
Sudan said that the sugar level of the patient is 900 and has got Mucormycosis due to long-term use of steroid drugs.
Pertinently, around half a dozen cases of Black Fungus were detected in Kashmir valley last year and at least three patients infected with it had died and the survivors lost their eyesight. The outbreak of the rare fungal infection was kept under wraps since last year and not reported by the healthcare administration.
Black fungus is a rare kind of fungal infection with a mortality rate of 50 percent. It is potentially life-threatening for patients with diabetes or for those who are immunocompromised.
Cases of Black Fungus have been found in different parts of the country as well amid the second wave of Covid-19. (KNO)
