JKPM starts online signature campaign for restoration of Anantnag’s Sherbagh park
Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Movement has started an online signature campaign for the restoration of famous Sherbagh park located in the heart of Anantnag Town.
In a press statement, JKPM Vice President Advocate Syed Iqbal Tahir said that Sherbagh represents the rich legacy of Anantnag town. He said that Anantnag is known as the land of springs and Sherbagh and its spring is of special significance to the people of Anantnag.
“Sherbagh is an epitome of Kashmiriyat as it has a mosque, a temple and a gurdwara located adjacent to each other. Besides the residents of Anantnag, people from various parts of south Kashmir who are attending the patients in the nearby hospital, also relax in this park”, Iqbal Tahir said.
“Around 2003-04, without any proper public consultation, the then PDP-Congress government made changes to the park, as a result, it has lost all its charm, the water level has significantly reduced and the fish are gone. Hence the need for this online petition”, Iqbal Tahir said in his statement.
While he accepted that at this stage, people of J-K are beset with existential issues, on account of the “illegal” abrogation of Article 370 and 35A but he stressed that places of historical importance can’t wait for the resolution of political issues. He further said that the aim of the petition is to draw the attention of the residents of Anantnag and seek the immediate intervention of the administration for restoring the glory of Sherbagh, He has requested the residents of Anantnag to fully support this initiative by signing the online petition. Link for the online petition is https://www.change.org/SaveOurSherbagh, the statement concluded.
