Rahul Gandhi disqualified as Lok Sabha MP after Surat court verdict

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been disqualified as a Lok Sabha MP following his conviction in the criminal defamation case over his ‘Modi surname’ remark.

The disqualification is effective from March 23, the date of conviction.

The former Congress president represents the Wayanad constituency in Kerala in the lower house.

A court in Surat on Thursday sentenced Gandhi to two years in the case filed against him over his “Modi surname” remarks.

The court also granted him bail and suspended the sentence for 30 days to allow him to appeal in a higher court.

Several opposition leaders have rallied behind Rahul and hit out at the government and accused the BJP of targeting political opponents. (PTI)
